Make Safe Manager’s Workshop
The Make Safe Manager’s Workshop is a three-hour course designed to help managers and supervisors understand the importance of preventing sexual harassment and violence in the workplace, identify strategies to implement Make Safe training for all team members, and develop a plan to prevent unwanted behaviour at work.
The Make Safe Manager’s Workshop is presented in eight parts:
-
Part One - Rise – eLearning module: defines key terms around workplace sexual harassment and violence to help team members recognize unwanted behaviour, explains the benefits of a positive and safe work environment, and outlines rights, responsibilities and legislation regarding sexual harassment and violence in the workplace.
-
Part Two - Recognize – eLearning module: describes how to identify sexually-charged and inappropriate behaviour, or behaviour that is unwelcome by the person experiencing it. It defines power imbalances, and give examples of non-verbal, verbal and physical behaviour that may be inappropriate.
-
Part Three - Respond – eLearning module: focuses on methods to intervene to stop sexually-charged, inappropriate or illegal behaviour at work. It explores the Address, Distract, Enlist, Disclose (ADED) model for intervention, explains conscious and unconscious bias and how they affect our decisions, and provides strategies for dealing with inappropriate comments in the workplace.
-
Part Four - Reduce – eLearning module: provides examples of ways to reduce the likelihood of inappropriate behaviour from happening in the workplace. It outlines industry culture and the ideas and attitudes that contribute to sexual harassment and violence in the tourism workplace, and presents ideas on how to improve the culture in the workplace and in the industry in general by supporting co-workers, and following established behavioural guidelines. Finally, it explores the effects of alcohol as a risk factor for sexual violence, defines consent, and outlines how to deal with unwanted behaviour from guests.
-
Part Five - Refer – eLearning module: provides resources to help implement an anti-sexual harassment policy at work, procedures for reporting workplace sexual harassment, and defines the role of the individual in improving safe practices in the tourism sector.
-
Part Six – video recording: contains information that complements the five modules of the Make Safe eLearning course, and aims to raise awareness and understanding of sexual harassment and violence in the workplace. It inspires understanding and empathy, and encourages commitment to making a real change in their workplace.
-
Part Seven – video recording: provides practical strategies to help businesses implement Make Safe training in their workplace. It provides examples of reasons cited for not implementing this type of employee training, and how to overcome these arguments. It also includes fictional case studies which will contribute to a list of strategies to achieve the desired outcomes.
-
Part Eight – video recording: points participants to other tools and resources available to help prevent and reduce sexual violence in the tourism sector, as well as an overview of the included Manager Toolkit containing templates, checklists and other ready to use resources. In addition, a facilitated exercise is presented that will help managers and supervisors develop an action plan tailored to their workplace, and help them set the steps needed to bring about real change in the workplace.
Please note, the first five parts are the same five Make Safe eLearning modules that are available for employees.
The included Manager’s Toolkit provides tools and techniques to build and maintain working environments that are free of sexual harassment and violence. These include reference sheets and workplace surveys to help clarify and understand the issues, templates and checklists to help develop and implement policies and procedures, sample complaint and disciplinary forms, infographics to raise awareness of the issues, tips and advice for developing and delivering the training, and strategies to access other available resources.
Upon completion of all modules, learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
